New Name.
In November of 2005 the members of North Carolina School Age Coalition voted to change this organization’s name to “North Carolina AfterSchool Coalition”.
Since 1991 the North Carolina AfterSchool Coalition has operated (as North Carolina School Age Coalition) as a professional association of “school age care providers” across North Carolina. During the past 15 years this profession has expanded beyond “care” to include a wide array of programs and activities that operate when school is closed and that provide safe, enriching environments for children youth from Kindergarten through High School. In 2004, our “parent organization” changed its name from the National School-Age Care Alliance (NSACA) to the National AfterSchool Association (NAA) (www.naaweb.org) to reflect the widening of the field of youth development work.
The mission of the North Carolina AfterSchool Coalition (NCASC) continues: To build a profession that develops, supports, and promotes quality programs for school-age children and youth during out-of-school time.
North Carolina AfterSchool Coalition History:
Did you know that the first meeting of the North Carolina School-Age Care Coalition was held in June 1991 and was conceived at the 1991 spring North Carolina School-Age Care Coalition Conference which was sponsored by the Division of Child Development. By that year's end, a mission statement and goals were adopted and a first logo was designed. It was also decided that statewide training should be an important part of the organization's efforts.
