About the Program:
The NC Flight Crew program is an exciting opportunity for girls and non-binary students in grades 6-12 who want to explore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) while serving their community and developing their own leadership skills.
The NC Flight Crew program is your ticket to an incredible STEM adventure! This program offers participants hands-on STEM experiences, leadership development, STEM career exploration, and the chance to give back and make a real impact in your local community.

Financial Support
We’ve got your back! Flight Crew Members receive $1,025 stipends and financial support to cover travel-related expenses, ensuring you can fully participate.

TIMELINE OF EVENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
September 2023
- NC Flight Crew Application Opens
- NC Flight Crew Application Reviews (Late September-Early October)
October 2023
- NC Flight Crew Applications Close (October 10th)
- NC Flight Crew Student Interviews (Mid-Late October)
- 2023 NC Flight Crew Selection Announcements (End of October)
November 2023
- Virtual Information Session for New NC Flight Crew Members (Early November)
- This virtual orientation will further familiarize new NC Flight Crew members with the goals and expectations for new participants.
- This session will also help prepare new Crew members for the upcoming Synergy conference
- Synergy (November 13-14, 2023)
- NC Flight Crew members will attend the annual Synergy Conference in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
- This is an excellent opportunity for students to attend what might be their first professional conference.
- Additionally NC Flight Crew members will have the opportunity to participate in several important facets of the conference:
- Participate in Professional Development Sessions
- Expand Their Network
- Serve as an Ambassador
- In order to remove barriers and to offset the cost to students and the families that travel with them, the program will fund the travel and hotel accommodations for participants in addition to the cost of registration for the Crew member.
December 2023
- Virtual Flight Crew Development Session 1 (Early December)
- Regional STEM Ecosystems and NC CAP will introduce Students to Building their Own STEM Activity
January 2024
- Leadership and Teambuilding Summit (Saturday, January 20th)
- This in-person event will give NC Flight Crew members the opportunity to interact, bond, and learn with members of their cohort, and will help NC Flight Crew members forge connections that last beyond the program.
- The Leadership and Teambuilding Summit will take place in central NC to minimize driving distance for as many members as possible.
- In order to remove barriers and to offset the cost to students and the families that travel with them, the program will fund the travel and hotel accommodations for them in addition to the cost of registration for the Crew member.
February 2024
- Virtual Flight Crew Development Session 2 (Early February)
- Lead an Afterschool STEM Activity (Late February or Early March)
- NC Flight Crew members will demonstrate their newly acquired STEM leadership skills by leading a group of afterschool students through a STEM lesson.
- Information Session for Community STEM Night Coordinators and NC Flight Crew Members (Late February)
- This session will also introduce coordinators to the NC Flight Crew program and allow them to meet their local NC Flight Crew member.
March 2024
- Flight Crew Development Session 3 (Mid March)
- Final Check In for Activity Planning
- Planning for Community STEM Night (All Month)
April 2024
- The NC Flight Crew’s Community STEM Nights take place (All Month)
- Celebrate the North Carolina Science Festival! (All Month)
- NC Flight Crew members are encouraged to attend 1-2 other local STEM events this month as ambassadors for the program and to further explore and gain additional exposure to STEM.
- Crew members can be compensated up to $50 for travel expenses, such as gas, to help increase their ability to attend these additional fun, local STEM events.
