ourBRIDGE for KIDS | ourBRIDGE is the only nonprofit in Charlotte that offers a secular afterschool and summer program to refugee and immigrant children. While other traditional afterschool programs focus on homework help and/or mentoring, our unique program focuses on three areas: Academics, Socio-Emotional Support, and Cultural Awareness. Academics - Pereira and de Oliveira (2015) acknowledge that the population of English Language Learners in mainstream classrooms is growing, and teachers struggle with providing sufficient educational experiences for these students. According to Pereira and de Oliveira (2015), proficiency in oral English can take anywhere between three and five years, while proficiency in academic language can take anywhere between four to seven years. ourBRIDGE has on staff a Literacy Facilitator, who has worked with ourBRIDGE since 2010. ourBRIDGE is in constant communication with homeroom teachers and ESL teachers at the schools to follow the students' academic growth, specifically in reading. Socio-emotional Support – Using a child-centered and trauma informed approach to care, ourBRIDGE recognizes that many children may have encountered toxic stress and post-traumatic stress related to poverty, family separation, violence or conflict in their country of origin, life in refugee camps, and, more recently, fear-based on the hostile, anti-immigrant political climate. By fostering an environment that values and respects children, ourBRIDGE creates a safe place for healing and support. Students and families will also have support including: community engagement coordinators, mental health counselors, and family therapists. |

My Help Foundation | During the summer children experience “summer learning loss” when they are not involved in high quality programs with opportunities for skill building. As a result, childre can forget up to two months of academic instruction, particularly in the areas of reading and math when they are not in school. My Help Foundation ensures that they are receiving some type of education which includes a tutor teacher and have classes one-on-one, if possible. |
