The Bridge Downeast

The Bridge Downeast has been in operation since 2011. We started out as a place for teens to come on Friday and Saturday nights and have expanded to a 21st Century Learning Center afterschool program and summer camp. We provide a safe place for kids to come after school. We recognize that in order to support the youth of their community, they need to support the family. Consequently, we have been adding programs for parents and seniors in the area.
Our motto is “A rising tide lifts all boats!” As a non-profit organization in the Down East area of Carteret County, we recognize that the future of our community lies in today’s youth. We strive to enhance and support their development throughout childhood and adolescence in order to provide the best chance for a successful transition into responsible adulthood.

Unique Sports

"Unique Sports" goal is to expose/ introduce youth to unfamiliar sports and physical activity, as well as using sports as starting point for teaching a range of “life skills” that can enrich each child’s experience of school and enhance the quality of their lives.

Objectives:

- Create opportunities to inspire in children a love of physical activity and play, as well as a
willingness to move beyond previously set limits.

- Present activities that enhance children's understanding of and respect for sporting behavior and
fair play and increase their capacity to solve problems together.

- Teach youth the basic fundamentals of 3 sports; Archery, Kayaking, and Fencing

This 8 week program will focus on 3 sports Archery, Kayaking, and Fencing. Although Archery will be the main
focus with 4 weeks of focus, kayaking and fencing will be allotted 2 weeks each. During each period, participants
will be taught the basic fundamentals such as rules/safety, equipment needed, and “how-to’s”.

Kayaking.A Basic 1 week lesson progression. Learning outcomes include: safety gear, water safety, and
equipment identification paddle strokes.

Fencing. This fencing unit is designed to teach fencing without the technical aspects of the sport. The
games presented here were selected as ones that teach the basic concepts of attacking and defending, the
simple principles of bouting and the important principal of "Right of Way". Teaching fencing, primarily
through games, is a fun way to introduce the sport to students while still providing an appropriate learning
experience. Technique is not emphasized in the unit plan since the program is only a few weeks in length.
Rather, the purpose is to expose the students to the ideas of fencing and the basic principles that make the
game so much fun. Throughout the unit, games are first used to introduce new ideas. Then, later in the
session or in other sessions, the new concepts are taught in a more traditional way.
Presentation of information and the practice of technique is kept short, games do not last long, but
each time an item is repeated it will be learned better. By the end of the unit the students will know terms
and will play the games with understanding. Most important, the students will be fencing.

Archery. As a result of this unit, the history, physical, emotional and social benefits will be learned. In
addition, safety strategies, skills and archery techniques necessary to participate in and enjoy archery as a
lifetime activity will be fully addressed.

Elizabeth Edwards Foundation The mission of the Elizabeth Edwards Foundation is to provide opportunities for achievement, enrichment, and public service for high school students who show great promise, but have limited resources. The Foundation follows the example that Elizabeth Edwards set by providing young people the kind of encouragement, support, and tools that they need to reach their fullest potential. Elizabeth Edwards students, called “fellows”, participate in academic tutoring, learn college and career preparatory skills, engage in public service in their community, and have the one-on-one support of a mentor. Elizabeth Edwards fellows are armed with pre-college resources and advising that is vital for success in today’s education world. Enrollment to the program is by application only. If you are interested in applying, please reach out directly to the organization.

Juvenile Literacy Center The Juvenile Literacy Center provides twice weekly one-on-one literacy and academic tutoring and small group classes for referred juveniles throughout the Triangle. This program also incorporates life skills instruction (i.e. employment, health, civics, parenting). We furnish students with the literacy skills needed to secure jobs and advance in an economic environment where workers must be able to understand and digest information quickly. By helping students and families earlier in the at-risk student’s life, this program arms youth with the skills to succeed in school and have a positive mindset about education. Academic success will then allow them to secure better jobs and a brighter future.
