The NC Center for Afterschool Programs Celebrates the 20th Anniversary of Lights On Afterschool at the Governor’s Executive Mansion
RALEIGH, NC (October 7, 2019) – The Public School Forum’s NC Center for Afterschool Programs (NC CAP) is proud to announce that it will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the annual nationwide event, Lights On Afterschool, with North Carolina First Lady Kristin Cooper and Dr. Terry Peterson, Chairperson of the Board of Directors, After School Alliance and National Education Advisor to the Mott Foundation, on October 15, 2019 at 2:30pm at the Executive Mansion in downtown Raleigh.
Launched in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities. The effort has become a hallmark of the afterschool movement and generates media coverage across the country each year.
The Afterschool Alliance organizes Lights On Afterschool to draw attention to the many ways afterschool programs support students by offering them opportunities to learn new things—such as science, community service, robotics, Tae Kwon Do and poetry—and discover new skills. The events send a powerful message that millions more kids need quality afterschool programs.
NC CAP’s celebration of Lights on Afterschool at the Executive Mansion will take place on October 15 at 2:30pm. The event is by invitation only. During the event, First Lady Cooper will read this year’s proclamation commemorating October 24, 2019 as North Carolina’s 20th Lights On Afterschool Day.
The Afterschool Alliance is calling on afterschool programs across the country to mark the 20th anniversary on October 24, 2019. More than 8,000 communities and 1 million Americans are expected to hold events celebrating afterschool programs for this year’s Lights On Afterschool anniversary across North Carolina and the entire country.
