We invite you to plan a field trip and observe the largest collection of waterfowl, including rare and endangered species, from all around the world. A field trip can be as simple as a self-guided tour of the park with your students, or, for a more in-depth experience, you may choose to add an educational program or activity. Guided educational tours are also available for grades 5 and up.

4-H is the largest youth development organization in North Carolina, educating hundreds of thousands of young people each year. Extension’s 4-H program is growing the next generation of leaders and equipping youth with the skills to succeed.

Bring the whole family for a hands-on exploration of the diversity of life within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Together, you will discover the wonders of the Smokies and learn of ideas to preserve natural and cultural treasures in your own backyard. During spring, summer, and fall, ranger-led programs suitable for children are offered. These programs offer children an opportunity to explore and learn about the park.

The North Carolina Science Fair Foundation proudly supports 9 regional science and engineering fairs and the State Science and Engineering Fair for students in grades 3-12. In addition, the Foundation also offers teacher workshops for educators seeking to support student-led inquiry and research.

The Mathematics and Science Education Center at Appalachian State University provides a variety of services, including professional development, a lending library of STEM materials, community events, and resources and supports for teachers in STEM fields. The center focuses on increasing access to high-quality STEM content for all learners and supporting diverse learners in STEM teaching, learning, and leadership.

Michael’s Angels Girls Club is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2016 under the leadership of Mrs. Shanell Knight. It was formed out of the desire to expose young girls of Edgecombe County to a world of empowerment, educational opportunities, and community service.

A co-curricular program designed to provide youth with World-Class, out of the classroom, academic support, and hands-on experiences. We offer a comprehensive afterschool program designed to address individual student needs. After School Brilliance aims to inspire, nurture and grow the critical and emerging skills necessary for success in our digital workforce. They offer classes (in-person and virtual) in ENGINEERING, ROBOTICS, ELECTRONICS, PROGRAMMING, E-TEXTILES, DESIGN, ENTREPRENEURSHIP, JEWELRY MAKING for all ages. We use and instruct with the following tools MICRO: BIT, EDISON ROBOTS, ARDUINO
RASPBERRY PI, LEGO WEDO, SCRATCH, PYTHON, 3D PRINTERS and other MAKING TOOLS.

Combining play with education, Snapology offers a mixture of interactive play-based programs for children ages 4-14 that teach STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) concepts using building toys like LEGO, and technology.

The Food Youth Initiative (FYI) is a project housed at the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) with support from a number of community partners.

The FYI Youth are a collective of youth representatives (high school, continuing GED and recent grads) and their youth organizers from groups across the state who are already working towards some aspect of food justice in their own communities. FYI youth envision and support the advancement of a just food system.

We are a public service center seeking to advance a sustainable energy economy by educating, demonstrating, and providing support for clean energy technologies, practices and policies.

The Museum Park art program facilitates collaborations among artists, designers, and environmental scientists to create works of art inspired by the natural world. Artists are commissioned to create site-specific temporary and permanent works that directly engage the landscape and present new perspectives on the natural world, exploring our relationship to the environment and the role of nature in contemporary society.

Seventh Grade Students from all over North Carolina can compete in the 2020 - 2021 AQ-IQ Contest. Please see the materials here on this page to get your started. This years projects will all be submitted on-line, and the contest is a great on-line or distance learning activity for classrooms. Projects are due on-line by April 12, 2021.

This year, 4-H (nationally) partnered with Virginia Cooperative Extension, Google, Bayer, Toyota, the United States Air Force, the Carnegie Institute for Science, NASA, including the NASA Astrobiology Institute ENIGMA Project and the Mars Science Laboratory mission, and Virginia Episcopal School to create activities that explore the topic of a mission to Mars.

Educational materials about Mount Mitchell State Park have been developed for grades 4-6 and are correlated to North Carolina's competency-based curriculum in science, social studies, mathematics and English/language arts. The Mount Mitchell program introduces students to the forest types of the Blue Ridge Mountains, focusing on the potential causes for forest decline in the mountains and at Mount Mitchell. Accompanying the program is a teacher's booklet and workshop, free of charge to educators.

Explore Imagination Station Science & History museum before or after your group participates in a scheduled program. We look forward to serving you with programs that interest your students and that supplement the great work you are doing at home & in the classroom with your students. Groups can choose different programs to customize their trip.

Vibrant and energetic, W. Kerr Scott Dam makes the perfect outdoor classroom for students to dive into a variety of topics. All field trips are standards-based, ranger led programs that brings the practice of science to life. Designed to provide students with an engaging learning experience, rangers deliver all programs with age-appropriate teaching techniques and goals in mind. All programs are provided free of charge to schools.

Educational materials about Cliffs of the Neuse State Park have been developed for grades 6-8 and are correlated to North Carolina's competency-based curriculum in science, social studies, mathematics and English/language arts. The Cliffs of the Neuse program introduces students to basic geologic concepts, including geologic history, fossils and prehistoric life, and erosion. Accompanying the program is a teacher's booklet and workshop, free of charge to educators.

To arrange a special exploration of Elk Knob State Park for your group or class, contact the park office. Elk Knob has a rich natural and cultural history, and by special request, park rangers will do on-site and outreach environmental education programs. School groups may be eligible for the Youth in Parks Environmental Education program sponsored by Friends of State Parks. This program is designed to offset the cost of school field trips at North Carolina State Parks. Contact the park office for additional information.

Kids have a blast exploring nine play areas while grown-ups are pampered with complimentary tea and coffee. Music, art, and science programs are offered several times a week and are free with admission. The Children’s Playhouse is a 501 c.3 nonprofit and is a great place to make friends of all ages!

The NASA Science Engineering Mathematics and Aerospace Academy, or SEMAA, is a national, innovative project designed to increase participation and retention of historically underrepresented K-12 youth in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM.

We aim to provide young K-12 students, particularly those of disadvantaged background, with virtual and adaptable mentorship, guidance, and tutoring in succeeding and achieving in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The North Carolina International Science Challenge (NCISC) is a yearly North Carolina STEM competition for high school students. The selected students have historically traveled to Beijing, China to present their STEM research projects at the Beijing Youth Science Creation Competition during the third week of March.

Additional support documents have been developed by teachers in the i3 LASER schools to fill in any gaps between the North Carolina Essential Standards and the STC® curriculum units. Zaniac Learning, a locally owned and operated academic enrichment center, has a history of partnering with schools, principals, and teachers to complement what students are already doing in the classroom. Every school year, students come to Zaniac for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math (STEAM) enrichment, academic achievement, homework help, and FUN.

Our gardens are a wonderful place for your family to explore the outdoors together on a family hike or learn more together in one of our engaging, hands-on programs. Programs are designed to help your family connect with nature and become part of the gardens.

Blue Jay Point offers site-specific educational programs in Piedmont natural history and the natural sciences, including current environmental issues and environmental ethics. Since The Science House (TSH) was founded in 1991, the organization has remained committed to bringing the resources of North Carolina's largest research institution to K-12 teachers and students across the state. EPA’s Community Engagement & STEM Education Program in Research Triangle Park (RTP) communicates EPA science to students, educators, and the public with the goal of increasing the public’s knowledge on how protecting the environment protects human health. Our outreach takes place in a variety of venues, including schools, universities, the community, the EPA-RTP campus, and educator conferences. The Speaker's Bureau is a free resource for groups in central N.C., with a focus on low-income schools (50%+ free/reduced lunch) to help close the opportunity gap and build capacity for a more diverse workforce.

We are all about helping groups and individuals foster a connection with the natural world through programs like bird watching, astronomy nights, nature play, and art classes. We offer public, group, and self-guided programs.

HTT is open to all middle and high school students. While there will still be an emphasis on computer science (watch out for Coder Dojo), other STEM topics will be explored as well. No prior knowledge is required. The purpose of HTT is to encourage exploration and curiosity.

ACE’s Adult Educator Workshops are designed to be fun, hands-on, action-packed, and informational for teachers, non-formal educators, youth leaders, scout leaders, and any other leaders interested in teaching about natural and built environments.

The Office of Environmental Education and Public Affairs hosts a guest lecture series called the Lunchtime Discovery Series. Professionals from a wide range of environmental backgrounds come and give presentations about their work and offer an opportunity for attendees to learn about a variety of subjects during the lunch hour. Topics range from spider diversity in North Carolina to Geographic Information Systems (GIS), to how to incorporate music in environmental education programming.

The North Carolina Mathematics and Science Education Network Pre-College Program (NC-MSEN PCP) is a STEM-enrichment program that recruits students from underserved populations in grades 6 through 12 and provides them with experiences that will equip them to attend a four-year college/university to pursue majors in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields

ACE Education is the Agapé Center for Environmental Education, a carefully developed and integrated program designed to meet the goals for science set forth by the NC Department of Public Instruction (Essential Standards for Science and Social Studies). Activities make use of experiential learning - proven to be the most effective method of education. Teachers and students may customize their field trip according to their classroom needs. The program takes place on 624 diverse acres of wooded hills, streams, pond, swamp, flora, fauna and the Cape Fear River.

Celebrating Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, STEM Saturday will expose students to a variety of STEM career options, while featuring STEM-related exhibits, demonstrations, and hands-on learning activities. Parents can attend a panel discussion with some of our area's top experts and STEM-related career professionals. The Wake Forest Summer Immersion Program is a hands-on learning experience. Students participate in residential one-week summer opportunities are offered for High School students in: Biosciences and Engineering, Business and Entrepreneurship, Dance, Debate and Public Advocacy, Documentary Film, Health and Exercise Science, Law, Leadership, Medicine, Neuroscience, Psychology, Sports Marketing, Sports Medicine, Technology and Visual Arts. Institutes are led by faculty, and industry professionals.

North Carolina Science Olympiad (NCSO) is a nonprofit organization with the mission to attract and retain the pool of K-12 students entering science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) degrees and careers in North Carolina. Every year NCSO hosts tournaments on university, community college, and public school campuses across the state.

The park was designated as a Nature Preserve in 2010 with the goal of protecting and preserving the area’s significant natural resources and providing nature-based recreation and environmental education experiences. Durant offers year-round general public programs for all ages, as well as self-guided interpretive gardens and hiking trails which highlight our unique habitats and abundance of plant and animal life.

Educational materials about Hanging Rock State Park have been developed for grades 5-8 and are correlated to North Carolina's competency-based curriculum in science, social studies, mathematics and English/language arts. The Hanging Rock program introduces students to basic geologic concepts and relates the concepts to the Sauratown Mountain range. Animal educators welcome kids and kids-at-heart to the Park’s Discovery Den that houses lots of Park animals, like reptiles and amphibians. An overnight trip to BJP, including sleeping in cabins, eating in the dining hall, singing around a campfire and stargazing, can be the highlight of a school year. Each day the class is 90 minutes and is led by Penn’s professional and energetic teaching staff. Kidzone is still part of the movement to reconnect children with nature. Kids don't spend nearly as much time outside now as their parents and especially their grandparents did when they were children. With the growing issues in our environment, a connection with the natural world is essential to preserving the wild places all the Zoo animals represent.

We worked hard to figure out a creative way to help families use the time they had together getting outside and hands-on with nature right in their backyards. The result of that was a series of quests that aren’t limited to the shut-down period. Families can use these investigations of soil, plants, insects, reptiles, and amphibians anytime to discover the natural world just outside their back door.

During the school year, some eight thousand elementary and junior high school students join our Project FENCE natural history curriculum both on the FENCE grounds and in their own classrooms. School children enjoy programs like "Schoolyard kids & turtle Scavenger Hunt" and "Insects and Creepy-Crawlies".

The RoboxSumo program is something unique that Pitt Pirates Robotics (FRC 2642) developed in June of 2013. RoboxSumo is a way to introduce STEM concepts to students across a wide range of ages and skill ranges. RoboxSumo is cost-effective, simple, and requires little training. The program is readily scalable to allow instructors and mentors to expand or shrink the program to meet the needs of the students. The program has been held in a number of venues since its inception and followed the same structure each time. In a 3-4 hour session, RoboxSumo participants receive instructions, build their robots, and compete.

STEM Encounters provides time and space for exploration. Each week a new Encounter is launched. Students will be exposed to new material, given new information, shown new tools, and given a chance to become acquainted with a subject. After that, it is all up to the students. Daily, students may choose to read, tinker, and contemplate this new material in his or her own unique way.

This center has a 70-seat theater, a classroom, and an exhibit hall with a 10,000-gallon freshwater aquarium tank. Exhibits include a touch tank, live animal exhibits, wildlife dioramas, a "Shells are Everywhere" exhibit and more.

The College of Engineering and Technology (CET) at East Carolina University (ECU) is partnering with middle schools in rural eastern North Carolina (ENC) to offer summer camps focused on renewable energy and green manufacturing.

At Bricks 4 Kidz® we are focused on introducing children to principles of science, technology, engineering, architecture, and math. Through the use of lab-focused exercises utilizing LEGO® bricks the children have the ability to learn, create, and explore. Our programs provide an exciting atmosphere for the students to build models created by Bricks 4 Kidz®, experiment with their own innovations, play games, and have loads of fun.

Full STEAM ahead meets every third Thursday of the month from 10-noon. We focus on rotating through science, technology, engineering, art and math. We occasionally participate in local service projects to meet the needs of our community.

The mission of the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center is the conservation and preservation of all species of marine turtles, both in the water and on the beach. We accomplish this through the rescue, care, and release of sick and injured sea turtles, public education regarding the plight of sea turtles and the threat of their extinction, and learning opportunities for students of biology, wildlife conservation, and veterinary medicine from around the world.

This program seeks to continue the history of establishing meaningful school partnerships in STEM education for K-12 youth. The program continues to assist underserved, underrepresented and underperforming students in STEM education. The program will adopt a well-established NASA STEM curriculum with problem-based learning at its core and integrate 3D printing technology, sensor-based measurement systems, and mini Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) design to enhance authentic and experiential learning experiences.

GoSTEM is a grant-funded STEM initiative that is aimed at introducing and integrating STEM learning into classrooms of all content. Grant funds have been used to install STEM labs in each secondary school and will continue to be used to purchase STEM resources, software, and training for students and staff.

The faculty at COA will be hosting Virtual STEM Night the second Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. Although STEM Nights are geared towards elementary school-aged children, these virtual events are fun for the whole family. The ECSU NC-MSEN Pre-College Program serves students from six counties in Northeastern North Carolina. Students participate in exciting activities in Mathematics, Science, and Technology through the Saturday Academy and a Summer Scholars Program.
The curricula focus is to conduct academic enrichment experiences in problem-solving, mathematics, science, communications, and technology. The Program provides needed guidance and enrichment activities to help students graduate from high school with the sufficient skills and interest to pursue a four-year degree in mathematics or science-based field of study.

Saturday Academy sessions, scheduled in the fall and spring, are designed to enhance student’s academic skills and interest in higher education. Saturday Academy is an intense academic program designed to serve students who are willing to go the extra mile to enhance their education. Student’s academic performance will be assessed and evaluated in the specific subject areas and instruction will be provided that will build on existing strengths and work on identified weaknesses. Prepare to Fly will explore the various types of aircraft and the science behind their flight. Participants will be able to build their own aircraft and test their flight capabilities, as well as be flight controller of a prearranged rocket launch.
Super Science: How does gravity work, why do birds fly south for the winter, and what on earth is lapis lazuli?! These questions and many more will be answered and explored in this course. We'll introduce a new topic weekly, do some research and a project to help us better understand how the world around us works!

The Department of Environment, Agriculture, Parks and Recreation (DEAPR) works to conserve and manage the natural and cultural resources of Orange County. DEAPR also strives to bring environmental education, recreation, athletics and other programs to residents of the County - with a goal of promoting cultural, physical and natural stewardship and well-being.

Robotics is open to rising 4th through 8th graders. Prior experience is not necessary. Although teams are formed in the early summer, they primarily practice/compete in the fall once school starts. WinSPIRE (Women in Science Promoting Inclusion in Research Experiences) is a paid six-week-long immersive summer mentorship program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that provides cohorts of woman-identifying and nonbinary high school students with hands-on experience in a research laboratory, engaging college-prep workshops, and an extensive support network of women in science.

Girls Talk Math is a FREE two-week-long day camp at the University of North Carolina. Camp is free for all attendees. The program is available to rising 9th through 12th graders who identify as girls or an underrepresented gender in the Triangle Area who are interested in exploring challenging math problems that go beyond the high school curriculum. A quiet area is available for individuals wishing to do independent research.

By participating in a real science project, you can help us solve the mysteries of bread. Your data will be compared with data from other participants, all over the world, who have completed the same experiment. Together we can use these data to learn how different flours affect microbial growth over time – and how those microbes affect the taste and texture of bread.

We believe that our students are agents of change - for themselves and for others. Through deepening their STEM and leadership skills and by learning more about the issues that face low-wealth regions, our students become advocates for change in their communities and schools.

4-H Bio & Environmental Science Club – Have you ever wondered if a tomato is a vegetable or a fruit? Or what kinds of bacteria live on the surface of your cell phone? The 4-H Biology & EVS club is designed to engage students (ages 10 to 15 years old) in activities using scientific techniques. Students will be provided exciting opportunities to learn more about the world around them.

Engineering Expectations is designed to hook kids on engineering by engaging them in creative thinking and out-of-the-box problem solving. We use a project based learning philosophy and have students complete hands-on engineering challenges through the use of the engineering design cycle. We help students learn and grow by integrating their knowledge from their math and science classes and help them apply it to an engineering problem. In addition to engineering, our students will learn and apply 21st century skills such as critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, and cross-disciplinary thinking.

Turtle Trash Collectors is a UNCW MarineQuest outreach program funded by the NOAA Marine Debris Program. It is our goal to educate youth about the impacts of marine debris and encourage behavior changes that will reduce the generation of marine debris in the future.

Mind Over Math is an independent tutoring firm founded in 2004. The New Hanover County Master Gardener Volunteer Association has more than 300 members who volunteer thousands of hours each year, providing information to the community and helping make the Arboretum gardens beautiful.

Cape Fear River Watch (CFRW, Inc.) offers several opportunities for environmental education and community development, including: canoe outings, creek keepers program; hands-on experiences such as field trips and clean-ups; providing a research library for public use; hosting seminars on environmental and preservation issues; sponsoring and conducting clean-ups of area waterways.

Educational materials about Carolina Beach State Park have been developed for grades 5-8 and are correlated to North Carolina's competency-based curriculum in science, social studies, mathematics and English/language arts. The Carolina Beach program introduces students to basic plant biology, focusing on carnivorous plants.

Moore County Schools is proud to host and organize CyberPatriot clubs at all three high schools. CyberPatriot is the Air Force Association's National Youth Cyber Education Program, created to motivate students toward careers in cybersecurity and other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The program features the National Youth Cyber Defense Competition for high school and middle school students.

4-H is the world’s largest out-of-school youth organization with nearly six million participants nationally. The 4-H mission is to empower youth to reach their full potential, working and learning in partnerships with caring adults to create sustainable community change.
Through non-formal, research-based, hands-on education activities, 4-H participants gain knowledge and life skills enabling them to become positive, productive, capable, and compassionate members of their communities. 4-H has three primary program initiatives: citizenship, healthy living, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).

Each year, in the last two weeks of June, the Moore County Schools DIF/STEM team offer the BEST STEM Camp in the state of North Carolina! In these two weeks of camp, students are given the opportunity to experience cutting edge technologies, hear directly from current professionals in STEM careers, take field trips to see STEM Careers in action, and have a lot of fun!

This interactive learning area allows visitors to discover what makes the longleaf forest so special, through a variety of hands-on displays for all ages. The room features a window out to a bird-feeder station, a child-friendly microscope, a live animal exhibit, a puppet stage and more than a dozen kid-friendly discovery boxes that invite visitors to explore different aspects of nature. You are welcome to enjoy this fun and educational space daily from 8:00am to 5:00pm.

Kids are so important to the Orchard mission to preserve the land. We offer three school program segments in the spring and four in the fall that are consistent with the North Carolina essential standards for social studies, science, and music for elementary and middle school learners that offer our young minds an engaging way to learn about the environment, the critters that make their homes in the fields and the apples that grow on the trees.

This club works mainly on electrical projects. They work on Project Record Books, Presentations, and send delegates to Electric Congress. The age of youth participants is 9-19. This club meets every 2 weeks in Bakersville.

Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics (SVSM) is a cost-free, state-funded program for academically talented students who may pursue careers based in science and mathematics. The program brings rising juniors and seniors together in residential settings for four weeks of intensive study.

The Center for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Education offers STEM Pre-College Program at UNC Charlotte. The goal of the STEM Pre-College Program is to broaden the pool of students pursuing mathematics, science, and engineering majors and careers. STEM Pre-College Program actively recruits.

Vision Builder Adventures (VBA) is a travel group/ community organization providing programs for elementary and middle school youth in the North Carolina Region. The program forms partnerships with local school districts, churches and community organizations.

ALOHA Mind Math Junior teaches basic arithmetic to 5-7 year-old children. The focus of the class is our innovative Abacus Methodology. Using this tool, your child will learn how to visualize numbers, so that they can quickly perform mental arithmetic that ordinary children can’t even do on paper.

Reedy Creek Nature Preserve protects 927​ acres of natural, forested habitat within Reedy Creek Park. There are over ten miles of hiking trails in the nature preserve for the outdoor enthusiast, giving visitors the opportunity to explore a variety of terrains, while enjoying scenic views of small lakes, forests, fields, streams, and wildlife. Get your hands wet investigating our salt-water touch tank filled with a variety of different coastal creatures. Explore numerous exhibits of plants and animals indigenous to North Carolina, including live venomous and non-venomous snakes, flying squirrels, talking birds, bears, bobcats and more. Venture into the cave in the lower level where you will find live turtles, nocturnal animal displays and aquariums depicting life along the course of the Neuse River.

The 5000-square-foot Health & Science Museum features hands-on health and science exhibits and programs.

4-H is a fun and educational program in which participants “Learn by Doing.” Young people complete hands-on projects in areas like agriculture, health, science, horticulture, and citizenship.

The Lab 4-H Club is a club for elementary youth. It meets once a month during the school year and focuses on science, technology, engineering, arts and math topics and empowering girls to grow in those STEAM areas.
